Megan and Scarlett were waiting at the front porch as the police vehicles pulled up. Both of the cars parked alongside the van from The Pearl Street Kitchen and a well-cared-for muscle car that Megan assumed belonged to Ginger. Scarlett told Megan to wait inside, so she stepped inside before seeing who the officers were.

A few minutes later, the police entered with Scarlett at their side. Megan didn’t know three of the officers, but the fourth was the familiar face of Officer Valdez. The woman noticed Megan as well and tipped her hat to her in a professional greeting.

After that, Valdez ordered the officers to gather all the guests in the common room while she spoke with Scarlett about the case and what had been found or had happened.

After the guests were gathered, Valdez cleared her throat.

“Good evening ladies and gentlemen,” Valdez said, “as you know, a terrible murder has taken place tonight. I’ve been informed that most of you know the victim from the university, so we’ll be starting interviews with you while these two officers here and I do a sweep of the grounds to learn more.”

She paused and looked around the room. Megan followed her gaze.

Karlie and Josh were busy refilling glasses with water and juice but kept their eyes open for whatever Valdez might have said or asked of them. Scarlett and Bianca were sitting together talking quietly among themselves. Megan saw concerned surprise evident in her mother’s expression, which made Megan wonder if Scarlett had let her pupil in on her darkest secret. Alfred was picking at his teeth with a thin toothpick, only to wipe it clean and toss it in the trash when he noticed Megan’s attention turning towards him. Lexie had a dreamy faraway gaze as she stared out the window.

It seemed that only Max was giving the police his full undivided attention.

Valdez continued, “We need everyone’s patience during this investigation. You will be restricted to the house grounds, pending any breakthroughs or emergencies. Once we take a statement from everyone, we’ll see about sending you home. For now, just relax and thank the Lees for their service tonight.”

She withdrew a notebook from her pocket and a pen, then cast one more glance around the room.

“Before we start though, does anyone know the victim besides Ms. Reid?”

Alfred shot out of his seat, knocking the chair he was sitting in back a good foot. As Josh ran over to pick up the chair and check it for damages, the older man slapped his palms on the table.

“She isn’t a victim, officer! She had a name!”

Valdez kept her stoic expression as she turned towards the angry man.

“My apologies. Do you know Miss Ginger then? Maybe you can start with your name?”

Alfred sneered. “Gladly. I’m Alfred. Alfred Burke. And Ginger was my date and…” He then stabs a finger in Lexie’s direction. “…earlier Lexie here said that she saw Scarlett outside of the guest room where my sweet lady was killed! That should be enough
